“Surreal influences with Baroque touches” is how Karl Lagerfeld described the accessories mood of gigantic twisted gold ropes that were draped on clothes, ears, necks and waists during the epic Spring Summer 1990 show swiftly replacing the classic CHANEL chains. In 1990, Lagerfeld traveled to Deauville, where Coco opened her first boutique in 1912, to photograph his newest designs for the season. Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen and Michelle Legare were all photographed in beautiful leisure settings draped with the stunning Cordage jewels. Victoire de Castellane’s coldcast resin ropes drip with 24K gold plating and jumbo baroque glass Maison Gripoix pearls. These are the famous earrings worn throughout the runway show and photographed on the top supermodels of the époque. Rich in scale and fashion history, Karl Lagerfeld created the huge salomonic ropes to evoke his hometown, 1900s Hamburg, Germany.
